ACTIVITIES AHOME promotes educational seminars (how to reduce "red tape") relating to ADUs and other housing options—targeted to contractors who build them and realtors who sell them. AHOME sponsors periodic bus tours (showing off ADU projects) for policy-makers. AHOME acts as a catalyst in bringing together groups with divergent housing attitudes (e.g., "anti-sprawl") and outdated zoning concepts, AHOME Board Members often are invited to serve on government body-appointed committees and task forces. AHOME provides timely information, 8-10 times per year, with its new electronic age AHOME NEWS email publication---limited to two pages to anticipate shorter attention spans. (Also US mailed to a large non-email database.) AHOME utilizes its publications to promote communications to elected officials (and testimony at public hearings) to promote expansion of affordable housing options. (In 2005, the Fairfax Board of Supervisors was encouraged to adopt a ONE CENT for AFFORDABLE HOUSING allocation of its property tax as a committed financial resource for affordable housing projects. IT DID!) (In 2005, the Alexandria City Council was encouraged to adopt a ONE CENT for AFFORDABLE HOUSING allocation of its property tax and full allocation of its recordation tax as committed financial resources for affordable housing projects. IT DID!) AHOME and its new AHOME FOUNDATION (established in 2005) jointly sponsor an Annual October RECOGNITION & AWARDS BREAKFAST to honor (1) a Northern Virginia individual and (2) a Northern Virginia organization for past year successes in promoting preservation or construction of affordable housing.
