"You're the Boss"

PURPOSE

In Fairfax County where AHOME was initially organized, our long term goal is to implement the County Board's Policy Statement of 1973 which states:

"All who live and/or work in Fairfax County
shall have the opportunity to purchase or rent
safe, decent, housing within their means."

Throughout Northern Virginia, we strongly support the preservation and production of affordable housing and are involved in many aspects of that issue.  Many of our Board Members serve on Task Forces relating to housing and are active within a variety of other organizations to assist with a consistent housing policy within the area.  AHOME has also introduced housing information that is now be part of the training curriculum at the Fire and Public Safety Academies to assist new employees with securing housing.

Lack of housing effects all aspects of the community.

TRAFFIC congestion is largely a result of countless people not being able to afford housing near their places of work.  Congested traffic due to intra-county commutes is just one symptom of this massive problem,  That symptom alone has already severely reduced the quality of life in Northern Virginia.

SERVICES such as public safety and education are being threatened as the available work force continues to deplete because there is less and less affordable housing.  Other such scenarios will occur as a result of an eroding tax base due to a lack of affordable housing.

FAMILIES, especially the young, the old and the economically disadvantaged have been hardest hit by the significant upsurge in housing costs and may soon find it impossible to afford even an apartment.
